So as you know I spent my Christmas on an island, now let me tell you a little bit about how it is to live on an island. Going into it I had no idea what to expect as I have never done something like this. It turned out to be an amazing experience! As i said we flew from Bogota to Cartagena, and then took a one hour boat ride to the island. There were a lot of people on the boat with us because it is a common thing in Cartagena for people to take day trips out to the islands, but of course we had to be different and stay there the whole week. We were the only ones staying on the island from our boat. The day tour that most people take ends at 3pm and everybody gets back on the boat and goes back to Cartagena.
At that moment you know who the real adventurers are, the ones staying on the island. So for that island it was us and one other family, since we were the only ones left behind we got close o them and started talking, ended up they were the owners of the island.
I imagined that we would be staying in a fancy resort (like the ones we take vacaions from in the US), that was not the case! This was a small, family owned island in the middle of a Natural Reserve where you are inserted in nature and living the island life to the fullest.
There were about 10 bungalows that fit around 40 people (we never saw more than 10 people in all the days we stayed there). It had beautiful palm trees, flowers, and plants that fill the island, and sandy walkways to get around. There were a few natural made beaches situated around the island. In the middle sat the main hut where we go for our meals and the bar was there too! We were served breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The meals were all very typical island, Cartagena style of food, which is very delicious(fried fish, rice, tropical salad, and fried slices of plantations)!
For me the staff made the difference to make it feel like home. They are all locals from the islands and they give off that warm welcoming islander life that was so easy to fall in love with. The locals from the other islands came over every day to hangout and talk. As a boat would pull up to the dock we would know who it was coming to hangout. Each passing boat always waved and had a certain whistle to say hello!
Keep checking back for more posts about the island life, there is more to come.
